JU teacher Afsar Ahmad dies of heart attack

Dr Afsar Ahmad, a professor of Drama and Dramatics Department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) and prominent playwright, died of cardiac arrest in the city’s National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases on Saturday. He was 61.

Dr Shoma Mumtaz, Chairman of JU Drama and Dramatics Department, confirmed the news to the media.

On his way back to Dhaka from Khulna, he suffered the heart attack on the plane. Later, he was taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, she said.

His death body was taken to the university where his namaz-e-janaza was held after Isha prayers, she added.

Professor Afsar left behind his wife, a daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

In a condolence message, JU VC professor Farzana Islam said that the death of Professor Afsar is an irreparable loss to Bengali drama, culture and the university.
