8 killed in Dhaka, Tangail and Khulna

At least eight people were killed in separate road and rail accidents across the country on Friday.

In Tangail, three people were killed and one injured in a collision involving three vehicles on the Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway at Kalihati upazila in Tangail on Friday morning.

The accident took place when an eastbound covered-van was attempting to overtake a truck of Mofiz Agro Foods when it collided head-on with a bus of Nayeef Express on the highway in Bhabla at around 11:00 am, said Md Shahidul Islam, Inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police.

According to Elenga Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Md Rasel, one person died in the spot.

Police and fire service officials rescued three persons and took them to Tangail 250-Bed General Hospital where two others succumbed to their injuries. The injured victim is undergoing treatment at the hospital. The authorities could not immediately identify the victims, according to the police.

In Khulna, at least four people were killed in a road accident as a truck and auto-rickshaw collided and sank in a ditch on Friday afternoon.

According to police, the incident took place at around 1:15 pm on the Khulna-Satkhira highway in Purba Jilerdanga area. The deceased were identified as Ilias Sardar, 45, son of Zakaria Sardar of Sharafpur in Dumuria, Reshma Khatun, 45, daughter of Mohiuddin of Rudaghara village in the same upazila, Babu, 28, of Sharafpur and his wife Shiuli, 20.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumuria Police Station Obaidur Rahman said that they have arrested the driver of the truck Rakib Sheikh.

Witnesses on the spot said that a sand-laden truck and an auto rickshaw were heading towards Khulna. When auto rickshaw was trying to overtake the truck, it got stuck in the bumper of the truck.  Both the truck and the auto rickshaw lost control and fell into the ditch. The auto rickshaw fell under the truck laden with sand and sank under water. No one could get out of it, they said. Locals recovered the body of a woman named Reshma immediate after the incident.

Dumuria Fire Service divers later recovered three more bodies from the water after a four-hour effort.  Attempts are being made to rescue the auto-rickshaw. One child is still missing.

Meanwhile, during the rescue operation after the accident, the traffic on the Khulna-Satkhira highway was disrupted for about 4 hours. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road.

In Dhaka, a 49-year-old security guard was killed after being hit by a train at Kuril Bishwaroad rail crossing of the city on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Abdul Barek, of Netrokona who worked as a security guard in city’s Gulshan area.

Witnesses said Abdul Barek was hit by a Kamalapur-bound train while crossing the road in Kuril Bishwaroad area and died on the spot. ASI Saklain of Airport Police Outpost of Bangladesh Railway said the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
