A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed nine leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including its Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, on a four-day remand each in a case filed under the Anti-terrorism Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Aktar passed the order after sub-inspector Aminul Islam of Vatara Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before her court seeking a 10-day remand. Opposing the remand plea, defence lawyers submitted bail petitions for the Jamaat leaders but the court rejected the plea after hearing.
Police arrested the nine Jamaat leaders and activists when they were holding a secret meeting at a house in Vatara area of the capital on Monday evening. Later, a case was filed against them with Vatara Police Station under the Anti-terrorism Act.
