Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday hoped that sufferings on the road due to BRT project would come to an end after this monsoon.
“Though the people are suffering a lot during the monsoon, I hope they will not have to suffer in the next monsoon. Vehicles will run on this way smoothly in the next year,” he said.
The minister came up with remark as people of Gazipur, Mymensingh and other districts of the northern part of the country have been suffering from traffic congestion since the BRT project started in 2012 on the Dhaka-Gazipur highway.
The project was supposed to end in 2016 but the gridlock on the highway now seems unending as the under-construction BRT project is running five years behind the schedule.
The senior minister said the ongoing construction work of the BRT project from Gazipur to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka is causing huge sufferings for people of Gazipur and northern districts as well.
The drainage system on either sides of the road remains in very bad condition which is coupling the public sufferings this monsoon, he said.
The AL spokesperson hoped BRT project would be opened in the next year along with much-anticipated mega projects --Padma Multipurpose Bridge, metro-rail and Karnaphuli tunnel.
The minister said the BRT project progress stood at 63.27 percent, he added.
