Friendship Solar Village launched in Kurigram

The government launched 'Friendship Solar Village' in Kurigram district on Sunday with a solar micro-grid to provide uninterrupted power supply to 100 families.

The 54-kilowatt micro-grid has been installed in Goynar Patal Char area, an island in Nayarhat union of Chilmari upazila of Kurigram district.

Besides 100 families, it will also supply power to a local market consisting of 24 shops, a friendship primary school, a legal booth, a weaving center, a sewing center, and a flood shelter with 26 families, he informed.

Some 6 million solar home systems (SHS) have electrified off-grid areas of the country while power has been supplied in some isolated island or villages through submarine cables.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid virtually inaugurated the village.

He stressed the need for more research on the technology of power generation from waste, wind and sea.

He said the share of renewable energy in the fuel mix is steadily increasing, and rooftop solar and net metering system are profitable business models now.

He stated that special emphasis has been laid on saving electricity as well as increasing customer service.

Friendship Chief Executive Officer Runa Khan presided over the function.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossain, Member of Parliament Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rezaul Karim spoke on the occasion.
