Two killed in N’ganj factory fire

A devastating fire broke out at Hashed Foods and Beverage factory at Rupganj in Narayanganj on Thursday afternoon, leaving at least two workers dead and 15 others injured.

The deceased were identified as Swapna Rani, 45, wife of Joti Sarkar of Sylhet, and Mina Akhter, 33, wife of Harun Mia of Golakandail in Rupganj.

The injured workers were taken to various hospitals in Narayanganj and the capital.

Abdul Al Arefin, deputy director of Narayanganj District Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the fire broke out at the factory at Karnagop area at about 5:30pm.

Being informed, 11 units of the firefighters rushed to the spot and began to douse the fire.

The fire could not be brought under control till 8:50pm, said Russell Shikder, duty officer of the Fire Service Control Room.

The officer said that the fire originated from the first floor of the seven-storey factor and spread up to sixth storey till 8:00pm. The workers of the factory got trapped inside the building. The firefighters were also trying to rescue the workers.

Many workers took shelter on the rooftop of the factory while many jumped down from the building.
