Right group hails social safety net expansion

Rights activists have appreciated the government moves to expand social safety net apart from make a call to increase the individual allocations amid corona pandemic.

Addressing a webinar, speakers also mentioned the underprivileged communities need more support from the policy level as many of them experienced unemployment in last one year.

Access Bangladesh Foundation organised the post-budget reactions meeting on proposed national budget on Sunday, organisers said a news release on Monday.

Disability Alliance on SDGs Bangladesh cofounder Khondekar Johurul Alam made welcome speech while ABF Albert Mollah moderated the meeting.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has proposed Tk 1076.14 billion for the upcoming fiscal year which is almost 7.77 percent higher than the allocation of Tk 138.45 billion in FY 2008-2009.

Albert Mollah expressed gratitude to Finance Minister for increasing the beneficiaries coverage for disability allowance by 208 thousands allocating more than Tk 2 billion.

 “Allocation on disability head is only 2.07 percent of total allocation for social safety net programme and only 0.37 percent of total national budget. This allocation is insignificant in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities,” he said.

A total of 72 representatives from non-government organisations, international organiaations were connected to the session.
