47 held on various charges in Rangpur

RANGPUR: Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) in separate raids arrested 47 people, including 19 muggers and one motorcycle lifter, and recovered stolen goods from the city on Tuesday night.

“We have seized four stolen motorcycles, 40 cartons of stolen cigarettes and Tk 90,000 in cash during the raids,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) of RpMP Abu Maruf Hossain told a press conference held at Kotwali police station here this afternoon. The RpMP has been conducting special operations daily in different areas of the city to curb the sudden increase in crimes specially mugging in recent days.

Maruf said police arrested Shahidul Islam Shahin, member of an organised gang of motorcycle lifters, from Tazhat areas in the city in connection with the theft of a motorcycle from the city.

“As per confession of Shahin, we arrested Anwarul Islam, another member of the gang, from Mithapukur area and seized four stolen motorcycles from his possession,” Maruf said. He said a group of muggers stole Tk 18 lakh in cash and cigarettes packed in cartons from a shop at Nababganj Bazar area in the city recently.

“Conducting a raid, we arrested Imran and Hossain, two members of the gang, last night,” he said, adding that 40 cartoons of stolen cigarettes and Tk 90,000 for selling cigarettes were recovered from them.

He said Dudu Mia, a snatcher, stabbed a rickshaw puller and tried to flee after snatching his rickshaw from Guptapara on Tuesday night.

“At that time, a mobile team of police chased snatcher Dudu Mia and arrested him,” he said, adding that a total of 47 people, including 13 accused in regular cases, were arrested last night.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali police station of RpMP Abdur Rashid, OC Investigation Rajib Basunia, Sub-Inspectors (SI) Ershad Ali, Mohammad Al-Amin and Mojnu Mia were present.
