CHATTOGRAM: The much-talked-about former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter was put on a five-day remand in a fresh case filed by the victim’s father Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday.

Earlier on the same day, Mosharraf Hossain filed the case following the final report submitted by the investigating officer of the case filed earlier by Babul Akter.

Currently, Babul is being quizzed in the custody of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to know the motive behind the killing.

Babul was avoiding the important issues in connection with the murder. He also provided some wrong information to misguide the investigators.

When contacted, PIB DIG Banaj Kumar Majumder told the daily sun that the team formed to quiz Babul was carrying out the interrogation.

“The accused is not disclosing the important issues properly and taking time,” he said.

Asked whether Babul will be taken to remand again, the DIG said the concerned team will take decision in this regard after completion of the five-day remand.

It is mentionable that miscreants chopped and shot Mitu to death while she was escorting her son to his school bus at GEC intersection, near her residence at OR Nizam Road, at around 6:30am on June 5 in 2016.

Her husband Babul, who had been playing significant role in combating militancy and terrorism in Chattogram, was promoted to SP and transferred to Police Headquarters few days before the incident.

Police primarily suspected that militants aggrieved with Babul for his brave role in fighting against them might have been involved in the killing.

But, after quizzing Babul on June 24 of the same year, police started saying that they could not unearth the motive behind the killing and trace main planner Kamrul Islam Sikder Musa, who was a close informant of Babul.

Babul was also released from his service in response to his ‘resignation plea’ later.

After the killing, police arrested seven persons including Abu Nasar Gunnu, Shah Jaman Robin, Motaleb Mian alias Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Hoque Bhola, Md Saidul Alam Sikder alias Saku alias Saku Maijja, and Shahjahan Mian in this connection.

Two other accused Nurunnabi, 28, and Nurul Islam alias Rashed, 27, were killed in ‘shootout’ with police in Rangunia upazila in the early hours of July 5 of the year.

On the other hand, the victim’s father Mosharraf Hossain was alleging that Babul was the mastermind of the killing.

He (Babul) carried out the killing engaging some criminals following his extramarital affairs with an Indian woman identified as Gaitree, an official of an international non-government organisation working at Cox’s Bazar.

Though the investigators quizzed Babul and his father and mother-in-laws along with others for several times in the case, the investigation apparently remained halted.

PIB got order for investigating the case in January last year and gave the breakthrough on Tuesday last arresting the plaintiff as prime accused.

The PBI had to submit final report in the case filed by Babul immediate after the incident.

Later, a fresh murder case was filed by Mitu’s father accusing eight person including Babul and Musa with the Panchlaish police station on Wednesday.

Babul was placed on five-day remand in the murder case on the same day.

Other accused of the case are Ehteshamul Hoque Bhola, Motaleb Mian alias Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Saidul Alam Sikder alias Saku alias Saku Maijja, Shahjahan Mian and Khairul Islam Kalu.

The PIB officials said Babul Akter contracted with the killers for the murder and sent money to them through two of his friends Saiful Hoque and Gazi Al Mamun.

Saiful was business partner of Babul while Mamun relative of ‘missing’ accused Musa. The investigators recovered the evidences of sending money through mobile banking services to the killers.

The two friends of Babul also made statements before a court in this connection on Monday last.

The plaintiff Mosharraf in the case alleged that Babul developed the extramarital affair with the Indian woman Gaitree Amar Sing while he was working as additional superintendent of police in Cox’s Bazar.

As Mitu could know about the matter, it resulted in severe family feud and led to the killing finally, he said.

Mosharraf told the reporters that Mitu read the messages sent to Babul by Gaitree through mobile phone on a writing pad of his son.

Two books gifted to Babul by the woman are also containing the handwriting of the duo, he said.

PIB DIG Banaj Kumar said steps were taken to arrest Musa and he will be traced out if he stays in Bangladesh.

Asked about the motive behind the murder, the PBI boss said they were justifying the allegations regarding the extramarital affair.

PIB investigators said Babul was trying to prove that the militants aggrieved with his activities killed his wife at the beginning of the investigation.

He didn’t identify Musa even after seeing in the video footages of the killing at that time, they said.

On the other hand, police also couldn’t find out the Babul’s son and daughter who were staying in the capital with their stepmother.

Babul gave wrong information regarding address of the residence at the beginning, they added.
