Almost all the garment factories have paid their workers Eid festival bonuses and salaries for April on Monday, following the government instruction.
According to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) data, so far 90 percent garment factories have paid salaries to workers while around 92 percent factory owners have cleared bonuses for their workers.BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said that some factories have some financial issues and they are looking after it so that workers get their salaries and bonuses before Eid.
He thanked the BGMEA and the BKMEA members for clearing the salaries and festival bonuses amid crisis.
The BGMEA president also said the second wave of coronavirus-induced pandemic has put apparel sector into deep challenge and they are trying to overcome the challenges.
Earlier in two meetings, State Minister for Labour and Employment directed the factory owners to pay their workers salaries and allowance by May 10.
The ministry also asked the workers to stay at their workplaces during the three-day Eid vacation fixed by the government.
BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim said the organisation has directed all its member factories to clear salaries and festival allowance by May 10.But, some factories were not able to pay salary and bonus due to the weekly holidays and will clear before Eid, he added.
