The authorities concerned on Monday have decided not to hold any Jamaat (congregation) in the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at the historic Sholakia Eidgah Maidan this year too due to the prevailing coronavirus situation.

Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Sholakia Eidgah Committee President Mohammad Shamim Alam said that they took the decision following the directives of the Religious Affairs Ministry asking not to hold Eid Jamaat at open spaces in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The government has issued the same directives through a gazette notification recently, he said.

“The ministry asked for holding Eid Jamaat of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at nearby mosques instead of Eidgahs or open spaces considering the risk of corona infection,” DC Shamim also said.

Since 1828, for the second time in the history, the Eid Jamaat is not being held at Sholakia Eidgah Maidan.

More than 1.5 lakh people from home and abroad attend the biggest Eid congregation in the country, he said.
