In an effort to raise awareness about preserving hilsa and boosting production of the country’s national fish, ‘Jatka Conservation Week-2021’ will be held from April 4 to 10 in ‘hilsa inhabited areas.

The slogan of the week is- ‘During Mujib Barsho, we pledge to catch hilsa, not jatka (hilsa less than nine inches in length).’

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Task Force Committee for Hilsa Preservation at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Monday, said Iftekhar Hossain, Public Relations Officer of the ministry.

Secretary of the fisheries and livestock ministry Raunak Mahmud presided over the meeting while senior officials of the ministry and the taskforce were also present.

Jatka is the juvenile form of the hilsa fish, biology and ecology of the Jatka are distinct from the adult hilsa stage.

Conservation of Jatka is important as juvenile species should not be fished before they reach maturity. Removing the fish before breeding age prevents reproduction processes occurring, and therefore continued growth of the hilsa species.
