Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage demonstrations across the country on Monday marking three years of imprisonment of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement while addressing a press conference at the party’s central office in the capital on Saturday.

“Three years of imprisonment of our leader Khaleda Zia will end on February 8. BNP will hold protest rally in district and metropolitan cities across the country on the day to protest against her imprisonment,” he said.

Rizvi said though Khaleda Zia has been now staying at her residence in the city’s Gulshan getting release from jail, she actually remains ‘in confinement at her house’, as she cannot meet her party leaders and activists.

“Khaleda Zia is in jail as collaborators of undemocratic government can’t be friend of democratic force. Khaleda Zia has been kept in jail by convicting her in false cases,” he added. The BNP leader claimed that the entire nation is shocked due to imprisonment of Khaleda Zia.

Party leaders Abdus Salam, Mir Sarafat Ali Sofu, Abdus Salam Azad, Mir Neaz Ali Newaj, Belal Ahmed and Habibur Rashid Habib, among others, were present at the press conference.

The BNP chief Khaleda Zia landed in jail on February 8, 2018, after a special court sentenced her to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. On October 30, 2018, the High Court raised her punishment to 10 years.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was released from prison in March last year on conditions that she would stay at her home in the capital and not leave the country.

Later, Khaleda Zia’s conditional release from jail has been extended for six months on the government’s executive orders in September last year.
