A Manikganj court on Tuesday sentenced five people to death in a case filed over the killing of Bortia Union Parishad member Ashraf Ali in 2013.

Judge Shahana Haque Siddiqua of Manikganj Additional District and Session Judge's court handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts.

The convicts are Manjur Rahman, 17, Moazzem Hossain, 35, Md Babul Miah, 34, Azizul Haque, 22, and Feli Begum, 18.

The court, however, acquitted 13 others accused from the charges as the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against them in the case, said public prosecutor Niranjan Bosak.

According to the case, the accused attacked Asharaf Ali, 50, with lethal weapons on June 18, 2013, in Fulhara village under Ghior upazila over a land-related dispute. The next day, he died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

The victim’s brother Monsur Ali filed the case with Ghior Police Station on June 20 accusing 25 people over the murder incident. Later, police submitted a charge sheet against 18 accused on May 31, 2014.

A total of 14 prosecution witnesses testified before the court on different dates during trial proceedings of the case.
