NILPHAMARI: Nilphamari farmers are harvesting potato in a happy mood as the crop has been bumper production and good prices this season.

Excellent growing of the vegetable is predicting a bumper production this year, said farmer Md Razib of Panchapukur Tatipara village under Sadar upazila.

“I have brought some 100 decimals of land under potato cultivation this season spending Tk 75,000,” said Md Razib. “I am expecting to make a profit over Tk 60,000”, the grower added.

The growers are earning Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 from cultivating potatoes on one bigha of land this year. It is mentionable that the same farmers did not get expected profit last year. However, the production cost was lower than this year.

Ragibul Hasan, a farmer of Goyabari village in Dimla upazila, said he cultivated potato on three bighas of land and got Tk 1.51 lakh by selling 12,660 kg of potato at Tk 15 a kg this year. The production cost was Tk 90,000.

“Last year, I got 12,000 kg of potatoes from three bighas of land and sold the total produce at Tk 1.20 lakh at Tk 10 per kg while the production cost was Tk 72,000,” said Ragibul.

This time, the production cost is high as they had to spend more money on pesticide due to prolonged cold and foggy weather, he said.

At present, the crop is being sold at Tk 12 to Tk 15 per kg in the field, said another farmer Akhil Kunda in Chikunmati village of Domar upazila.

Although the production cost has increased this year, they are getting expected prices, said Akhil.

Ali Hossain of the same village in Domar upazila said he cultivated potatoes on 12 bighas of land by spending Tk 2.50 lakh. He has already got 17,430 kg of potato from four bighas of land and sold the total produce at Tk 12 per kg, said Ali Hossain.

“Hopefully, I will get the same yield from the rest bighas of land. I’m also expecting fair prices,” he said.

Farmers have been getting good profit from potato cultivation since last year, said Ali.

According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Nilphamari, potato has been cultivated on 5,500 hectares of land in the district this year, which was 4,520 hectares last year. Farmers have got 30 to 35 tonnes of the crop from one hectare of land.

Nilphamari DAE Deputy Director Obaydur Rahman Mandol said although potato farmers have spent additional production cost this year due to rough weather, they are happy to get good yield and fair prices.

Agriculture officials said, a good number of farmers are reaping benefit from early variety potatoes as they had cultivated those after harvesting the short duration variety aman paddy like Bina-7 at different villages of the upazilas.

During a visit on Saturday this correspondent saw farmers busy reaping early variety potato at different upazila of the district.
