Photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol was released from Dhaka Central Jail on Friday after more than seven months of his imprisonment.

Kajol's family members including his wife Julia Ferdousi and son Monorom Polok were present at the jail gate during his release.

On March 9, Awami League lawmaker for Magura-1 constituency Saifuzzaman Shikhor filed the case with the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station against Kajol and 31 others alleging that the accused had defamed him by publishing a report on crimes of expelled Narsingdi Juba Mahila League general secretary Shamima Nur Papiya.

On March 10, Hazaribagh unit Juba Mahila League leader Osman Ara filed the second defamation case against Kajol with the Hazaribagh police station over allegation of defaming Shikhor.

On March 11, the third defamation case was filed against Kajol with the Kamrangichar police station by an Awami League activist.

Kajol went missing after he had left office of his biweekly Pakkhakal magazine on March10, one day after lawmaker Shikhor filed the case.

Kajol's wife Julia Ferdousi Nayon filed a general diary with Chawkbazar police station on the next day. On March 18, Kajol's son Manarom Pulok filed an abduction case.

On the night of May 2, Jashore BGB detained Kajol, who remained missing for 52 days, allegedly for trespassing into Bangladesh from India.

Kajol was first sent to Jashore central jail and then transferred to Dhaka central jail. He has been in jail since May in connection with the cases.
