Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman on Thursday said the residential halls of the university will not be opened without the government’s decision.

“The reopening of the residential halls of the DU is a matter of national decision,” the VC said while talking to leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League DU unit and journalists.

They went to meet him, demanding reopening of halls before examinations.

The VC said, “I do not disagree with your demands. But, the point is that this is not an ordinary closure. The educational institution has remained closed to prevent Covid-19 infections. If anyone makes a hasty decision today, it could be a big risk and questionable internationally.”

"It's a national decision. But with such a decision (reopening halls) in DU, we cannot take the whole nation to the other side. It would be absolutely unreasonable. As a result, decisions have to be made keeping these issues in mind," he explained.

The Vice-Chancellor further said, "We will have to decide nationally to open the residential halls.
