Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said the Padma Bride will open for traffic by 2022.

“Hopefully, the bridge will open for traffic by 2022. We are waiting for the day,” he said.

“The bridge is being constructed with its own fund ensuring utmost transparency. There is no anomaly,” he also said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said this at inaugural function on Bangabandhu, War of Liberation and Bangladesh corner marking National Victory Day at Setu Bhaban in the capital.

The minister firmly said there is no scope of misusing a single penny from the fund allocated for construction of the bridge.

“As a minister, I did not give job to single person of my constituency. I did not take the opportunity,” he said.

Quader said the dream project Padma Bridge is a symbol of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s courage.

“She (Sheikh Hasina) also proved that only daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has the courage to challenge the World Bank to build the Padma Bridge with own fund,” he said.

Referring to the high construction cost of Padma Bridge, the minister said they are protesting just for the sake of a protest.

“Many have also promised not to use the Padma Bridge. Where the World Bank acknowledges their mistake but a vested quarter in Bangladesh is still spreading hatred,” he said.

The minister also alleged that the evil forces are still trying to put stigma on the government instead of praising the government for implementing the bridge with its own fund.

Secretary of bridge division M Belayet Hossain, additional secretary of the ministry M Anwar Hossain, among others, addressed the function.
