A Sylhet court on Thursday afternoon placed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ashek Elahi on a five-day remand after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested him from Sylhet Police Lines on Wednesday night for his alleged link to the custodial death of Rayhan Ahmed.

PBI Sylhet Superintendent Muhammad Khaled-uz-Zaman told journalists that the ASI was taken before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman.

The PBI sought a seven-day remand for Ashek Elahi, who was suspended for his involvement in the killing of Rayhan at Bandarbazar Police Outpost, but the magistrate granted a 5-day remand, said the officer. On the instruction of Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the ASI and some other policemen picked up Rayhan, 34, from Neharipara of Kotwali on October 10.
