Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), an organisation of physicians, protested against a health ministry circular regarding quarantine and working hour for physicians of public hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Terming it a sudden and unscientific circular, the organisation demanded that the ministry cancel the order immediately.

The health and family welfare ministry issued a circular on July 29, mentioning new rules of quarantine tenure, working hour, accommodation during isolation and transportation for physicians, nurses and other health workers of the government hospitals dedicated to Covid-19 treatment.

In a letter sent to Health Minister Zahid Maleque, BMA president Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and secretary general Ehteshamul Haque Chowdhury on Thursday said, “The circular has surprised and stunned us. Physicians are angry over such order which ignores the rules of World Health Organisation, neighbouring country and medical science.”

Demanding to continue the ongoing arrangement, the BMA leaders urged to find a scientific way after discussing with the representatives of the physicians’ organisation. “A section of opportunists very tactfully pushes physicians and people face to face,” they said.

Talking to daily sun about the health ministry circular, Dr Md Jabed, central executive member of the BMA, said, “Unfortunately, the health ministry didn’t discuss the issue neither with our physicians’ leaders nor National Advisory Committee on Covid-19 before issuing the circular.”
