PANCHAGARH: Panchagarh farmers are happy with bumper litchi production as the month-watering fruit has appeared in the local markets here.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said the farmers got output beyond their expectation, making them happy with getting cash money by selling those in the local markets, reports BSS.They said commercial cultivation of litchi started about 10 years ago in the district and now it is increasing every year. Some 1000 hectares of the land had been brought under litchi cultivation here this year, they added.
Five varieties of litchi were grown by the farmers. These are local, China 2, 3 and 4 and Bombay varieties. China 2, 3 and 4 varieties are in great demand in markets. Local variety of litchi is being sold at Taka 50 to 70 a bundle of 50 pieces in the markets.
Farmer Abdul Malek of Dangapara village under Debiganj upazila told BSS, he sold litchi from his orchard on 2 acres of land at Taka 3 lakh to the wholesale buyer. Md. Samchul Huque, deputy director of Panchagarh DAE told the agency, litchi outcome has been satisfactory this year.
He said the production will increase further if the farmers use balanced fertilizers in their litchi orchard.
