‘Drug peddler’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

COX’S BAZAR: A drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in the district early Friday.

The identity of deceased youth could not be known immediately.

Teknaf-2, BGB Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Faisal Hasan Khan said on information that a gang of drug peddlers was entering Bangladesh with Yaba tablets through Jadimora area of Naf river under Hnila union, a team of the BGB raided the area at around 3:30am.

As the BGB-men challenged them, the criminals tried to flee the scene with a sack. At one stage of the chase, the drug peddlers opened fire on the BGB-men, prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said. 

Later, the deceased was found lying on the spot in bullet-hit condition, said the BGB officer.

He was sent to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, Faisal said. 

A total of 1.30 lakh pieces of deadly drug Yaba, a local gun and one round of cartridge were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, he added.
