SATKHIRA: Kaliganj upazila administration organised an exceptional public meeting in cooperation with ‘Nabajatra’ a local NGO, financed by Food Assistant Project of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) held at Kaliganj Officers’ Club auditorium of Satkhira district on Monday to create awareness about child marriage. Over 75 adolescents of the upazila pledged in the day not to get married before reaching 18.

Hundreds of teenage girls, guardians and rights activists participated in the event under the banner of World Vision Bangladesh — a non-government organisation.

Local social worker Md Mozammel Haque Russell chaired the programme while Deputy Director of the local government Hasain Shawkat spokes as the chief guest.

‘Marriage registrars, imams, UP chairmen and members can effectively prevent child marriage, checking smart national identity cards and birth reg documents,’ Hasain Shawkat said.

Many girl students fail to complete schooling up to the SSC due to early marriage and unaware parents hardly consider the health issues while marrying off their underage daughters, especially in rural areas, the speakers said.

Earlier the girl students accompanied by locals bring out a procession, carrying banners and festoons with the slogan ‘no marriage before 18 in any situation’.
