A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Awami League’s Gandaria thana unit joint general secretary Rupan Bhuiyan on a five-day remand for interrogation in a case filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth.

Dhaka Senior Special judge KM Imrul Kayesh passed the order after the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) assistant director Neamul Ahsan Gazi, also investigation officer of the case, sought seven-day remand to grill Rupan at their custody.

The court also accepted a petition of ACC to show arrest of Rupan’s brother and AL Gandaria thana vice-president Enamul Haque Enu in a graft case.

On October 23, last year, ACC filed a case against Rupon on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth of Tk 14 crore while the commission also filed another case against Enamul Haque Enu for amassing illegal wealth worth of Tk 21.89 crore.

Earlier on January 13, a team of CID arrested the two AL leaders from a house in Subadda area of Keraniganj for their alleged involvement in casino business.

The duo was hiding in the house of one of their employees in Subadda area. The CID team also seized 12 mobile phone sets and Tk 40 lakh from their possession.

The two AL leaders went into hiding since law enforcers raided their house at Gendaria in September last year and seized 8,072 grams of gold and Tk 5.5 crore in cash.

At least four cases were filed against the brothers for their alleged ties to illegal casino business, money laundering and corruption.
