Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday announced  that the roads and footpaths would be freed from illegal occupants.

The mayor said, “There will be no illegal establishments and business on the roads and footpaths.”

“We will start drive to evict the illegal establishments along the road and footpaths from 22 September,” the mayor said.

He said this while speaking at a press conference at DNCC headquarters at Gulshan-2 in the capital.

“Our councilors often blame the officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police stations for the continuation of the businesses occupying roads and footpaths. On the other hand, the OCs blame our councilors and ruling party leaders for the illegal business,” the mayor said.

“We have to stop blame game. We will work with police to remove the illegal establishments, “the mayor said.

The new Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said, “If you want, there will be no illegal establishments on the roads and footpaths.”

In this regard, police and the local councilors will have to work together, he said.

Lawmakers Akbar Hossain Pathan Faruk and Elias Uddin Mollah vowed to free the roads and footpaths from illegal occupation.

Councilors of different wards, DNCC officers and senior police officers attended the programme.
