3 ‘robbers’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

Three suspected robbers were killed in a ‘shootout’ with police in Burichang upazila of Cumilla in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased were identified as Babul alias Torkari Babul, 39, Ershadul alias Asadul, 27 and Oli Mia, 43. On a tip-off that the suspects had been preparing for committing robbery at Comalla village of the upazila, police conducted the drive.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, the ‘robbers’ opened fire on policemen, triggering a ‘shootout.’ Three members of the gang sustained bullet injuries. They were taken to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where on-duty physicians pronounced them dead.

Each of the trio is accused in more than five cases filed on various charges including murder, possessing illegal arms, robbery and drug dealing, said the officer-in-charge (OC) of Cumilla Detective Branch (DB) of police, Md Mayeen Uddin Khan.

Police recovered pistols, bullets and machetes from the spot. The bodies were kept at the CMC morgue for autopsy, the OC said.
