Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has said that political goodwill and social awareness can combat violent extremism.

The chief of the DMP came up with the statement while delivering his speech as the chief guest at a debate competition at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) in the capital on Saturday.

He said that ‘Bangla Bhai’ and his cohorts used to roam freely brandishing firearms in broad daylight in Rajshahi in 2004 and 2005, but they were patronised by the then governing party.

During the period of time, a series of bombing took place in 63 districts with the smuggling of 10 trucks of firearms into Chattogram on April 2, 2004, he said.

“The terror attacks, including Holey Artisan Bakery one in Gulshan in 2016, might not have occurred if Bangla Bhai had been prevented, proper action on the series of bombing had been taken and firearms had not been allowed in our territory,” he added.

Debate for Democracy arranged the event. Students of University of South Asia became champion defeating Darunnazat Siddikia Kamil Madrasah in the competition.
