Transparency Inter-national Bangladesh (TIB) has demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged negligence of duty and role of police over the gruesome murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

In a written statement to the mass media, the TIB said on Thursday that it was unthinkable of the present violence and atrocity limit to women across the country.

There is no alternative way but to sternly apply the law against the people responsible, it says.

TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekaruzzaman said, “We hope the investigation will end fairly and the offenders will get exemplary punishment.”

“But we are panic-stricken as allegations have been raised against police personnel for their negligence of duty and their role over the murder.”

Pointing to former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station Moazzem Hossain, Dr Iftekaruzzaman said he did not take the sexual matter of Nusrat by Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula into account, rather raised question over its credibility.

Even it has been reported that the police officer tried to turn the murder into suicide. After taking the case, he tried to divert the incident, he added.

“The internal investigation of police is not sufficient in this regard. The police super of Feni claimed the OC as innocent. So, we can’t keep faith in the police investigation into the Nusrat murder.”

On April 6, five students of he madrasa set Nusrat on fire as she refused to withdraw the case filed against the principal on charges of sexually harassing her.

The girl lost her battle for life while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested another suspect, Muhammad Sharif, in connection with the murder on Wednesday.

Police have so far arrested 14 persons in connection with the murder.
