‘Govt providing grant to 62,000 orphans’

State Minister for Social Welfare Sharif Ahmed, MP, on Wednesday said that the government is providing capitation grant to 62,000 orphans of 3,500 non-government orphanages across the country with a view to making them as skilled manpower.

He also urged the private sector to increase their activities along with the government for the development of the orphans and their families in the country.

He came up with the remarks while addressing an event titled “National Level Learning Sharing Event on Strengthening Families for Promoting Orphan Rights” organized by UK based NGO Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) at CIRDAP international conference center in the city.

Praising the initiative of Islamic Relief Bangladesh (IRB) to celebrate OIC declared ‘Orphan Day’ on Ramjan 15 in the previous year, the state minister also said the social welfare ministry will take initiative to celebrate the Orphan Day nationally.

IRW Country Director Akmal Sharif presided over the programme while Additional Secretary Aynul Kabir of Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Additional Secretary Sushanta Kumar Pramanik of Social Welfare Ministry were present as the special guest.

Aynul Kabir said the woman and children affairs ministry are running around 7,000 child clubs across the country which are working for the development of the deprived children of society.

Referring to the data of UNICEF, speakers also said around 15.30 crore children are orphans across the world while 5,760 children are becoming orphan every day.

The numbers of orphan children are over 40 lakh in Bangladesh as per the data of Bangladesh Statistics Bureau, they said.
