15 to die for killing cloth trader in Dohar

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced 15 people to death and life term imprisonment to two others over killing of a cloth trader in Dohar upazila of Dhaka in 2008.

Judge Pradip Kumar Roy of Dhaka First Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court handed down the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom.

The 15 death-row convicts are Siraj alias Seru Karigar, Minhaj alias Minu, Khalil Karigar, Shahjahan Karigar, Didar, Ershad, Kalu, Ajhar Karigar, Niyaj Uddin, Mozammel alias Suja, Jalil Karigar, Jalal, Billal, Ibrahim and Abdul Latif.

Of the convicts, Didar, Earshad, Jalil and Ibrahim are on the run while other convicts appeared before the court during delivery of the verdict.

The court also sentenced two absconding accused, Majeda Begum and China Begum, to life term imprisonment and fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in jail. 

A total of 14 prosecution witnesses (PWs) testified before the court.

The convicts beat the victim, Nazrul Islam, on April 3, 2008, and left him alone  over a land dispute. They also thrashed Nazrul’s wife, Surjavan, as she tried to save her husband.

Later, people took Nazrul to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Victim’s uncle Nazimuddin Ahmed filed a case with Dohar police station on the day of the incident.

On July 26, 2008, police submitted a charge sheet against 17 people in the murder case.

On May 25, 2009, the court framed charges against them and started the trial proceedings.
