Five people were reportedly infected with the Nipah virus in the country this year and all of them died, marking the fatality rate in the viral disease 100%.
"This year, all the Nipah cases had a history of consuming raw date palm sap," Prof Dr Tahmina Shirin, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR), disclosed the information at a programme in the institute on Thursday.
The IEDCR chief said of the five Nipah cases, four were men, and one was a three-year-old girl. The cases were reported in four districts – Naogaon, Khulna, Shariatpur, and Manikganj.
"Nipah virus spreads through bat secretions or saliva. Consuming contaminated raw date palm sap can lead to its transmission. Infected individuals can transmit the virus to family members or healthcare workers," she said.
