A joint team of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Naogaon Detective Branch (DB) police on Saturday arrested a ringleader and coordinator of a bitcoin selling gang from Naogaon district.

The arrestees are Rakibul Islam Khandaker Rocky, the ringleader, and Sarwar Hossain Dolar, the coordinator, police said.

Bitcoin is a decentralised digital currency that one can buy, sell and exchange directly without an intermediary.

Intelligence sources said that the NSI received information that the duo was selling bitcoin. On information, they enhanced surveillance and found authenticity.

After confirmation, the NSI and DB police conducted a raid and arrested Rocky from his house at Chowrbari in Atrai upazila in the district around 9:30am on Saturday. 

The information extorted from him helped the NSI and police arrest Dolar from Gostahati in Sadar upazila.

During primary interrogation, they said that they had been selling bitcoins for a long time. Recently, they sold bitcoins worth Tk 1.56 crore. Besides, Dolar used to transact the amount of money using a Shadhin Master Card of Bank Asia.

The NSI and police came to know that the accused had 300 more bitcoins wroth Tk 105 crore.
