Walton Central Zone all but confirmed their place in the final of the ongoing Independence Cup after defeating BCB North Zone by 28 runs in their second match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground on Tuesday.
Central Zone skipper Mosaddek Hossain struck an unbeaten 54 runs while Abdul Mazid made 53 runs as they posted 262-5 in their stipulated 50 overs after being sent into bat first.
Central Zone’s Shakib Al Hasan, who produced another all-round performance in the tournament by scoring 33 runs and taking 1-49 in his 10 overs, left for Dhaka after the match as he won’t be available for the remainder of the tournament.
Meanwhile, BCB South Zone tasted their first victory in the ongoing meet when they beat Islami Bank East Zone by three wickets in the day’s other match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Imrul Kayes top scored for East Zone with 69 runs while Irfan Sukkur made 33 runs but they could post only 192-8 after they were sent into bat first.
National ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal, who made a comeback to competitive cricket after three months, failed to shine with the bat as he could make only nine runs off 27 balls for East Zone while former national skipper Mohammad Ashraful could make only 15 off 57 balls.
South Zone’s Mustafizur Rahman was the most successful bowling claiming 3-44 while Nahidul Islam finished with 2-17.
Mahedi Hasan made the highest 37 not out while Nahidul, Zakir Hasan and Myshukur Rahaman all scored 27 runs each for South Zone.
Table-toppers Central Zone will face South Zone in their last league match on Thursday while North Zone will take on East Zone in the other match on the same day. The final is scheduled to be held on Saturday.
