The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has expressed grave concern over the sudden decision to halt all import and export activities through Benapole Land Port after 6pm, warning that the move could severely disrupt trade and cause financial losses for businesses.

According to DCCI, the decision — reportedly taken by Benapole Customs to curb illegal goods infiltration and smuggling — was made without prior notice or consultation with stakeholders.

The chamber said such an abrupt move would have “significant implications” for cross-border trade, as Benapole is Bangladesh’s largest land port and the main gateway for bilateral trade with India, according to a press release.

Citing data from the Bangladesh Land Port Authority, DCCI noted that during the fiscal year 2024–25, Benapole handled 2,011,268 tonnes of imports and 421,713 tonnes of exports.

Restricting operations after 6pm could therefore lead to major revenue losses for both traders and the port authority, the chamber warned.

The organisation also said the shortened operating hours had already left hundreds of trucks — many carrying perishable goods — stranded on both sides of the border, increasing the risk of damage and wastage.

The move, it added, could disrupt supply chains, delay shipments, and increase lead times for international trade.

While acknowledging the importance of preventing smuggling, DCCI emphasised that “suspending trade operations at the country’s largest land port is not an acceptable solution.”

It urged the government to ensure better coordination between law enforcement agencies and port authorities to tackle illegal trade without disrupting legitimate commerce.

To restore normal business operations, the chamber called on the relevant authorities to immediately withdraw the restrictions and take effective measures to ensure smooth and uninterrupted trade through Benapole Land Port.
