Police have moved a Dhaka court seeking 10 days remand for interrogating Evaly Chairman Shamima Nasrin and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammad Russel in a case filed for embezzling money.

Court sources said police filed the remand petition on Friday to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court.

Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) handed them to police.

RAB arrested them after conducting a raid on their residence in Mohammadpur area of the capital on Thursday.

The raid came soon after a customer named Arif Baker filed a fraud case against Evaly CEO Russel and his wife Shamima Nasrin with Gulshan police station in the morning.

The plaintiff alleged that Evaly has taken huge money from customers in e-commerce business, but did not deliver products to them.

“I saw Evaly’s advertising and made orders worth Tk 310,000 from the site. But I got no products,” he said.

Arif contacted Evaly offices and the CEO over the purchases, but he received death threats, police said.

Allegations are rife that the Evaly chief and his wife deceived their customers in their e-commerce business.

Different media said Evaly has embezzled Tk 600-700 crore from many customers in the name of selling products.

On Tuesday, an inter-ministerial committee headed by the Commerce Ministry recommended a legal action against Evaly in the wake of its financial irregularities.

On July 17, a Dhaka court issued a ban on overseas travel of the couple following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The ACC launched a probe into the allegations of Evaly’s embezzlement of money from customers.

On August 27 last year, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank directed the banks concerned to freeze accounts of Evaly CEO Rassel and Chairman Nasrin.
