27 miners killed in Peru bus accident

A bus carrying miners fell into a ravine on a mountain road in southern Peru on Friday, killing 27. Another 16 miners were injured in the early morning accident on a road in the Andes, the Ares Mining Company said.

The bus was headed from a mine near an archeological site to the city of Arequipa, it said.

The bus plunged into a 400-metre ravine, leaving bodies scattered across the slopes of a hill in the desert region.

It was the second major road accident in 10 days in Peru, where driving can be dangerous due to speeding motorists, poorly-maintained highways, a lack of signs and poor traffic safety enforcement.
