Four die as overcrowded boats sink in Bay of Bengal

At least four people, including a child, drowned after two overcrowded boats capsized in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Md Akkas, 28, Md Minhaz, 10, Abdul Malek, 50, and Abdul Jalil, 32, residents of Banshkhali upazila.

Witnesses said the boats could carry around 40 to 50 people but there were approximately 120 passengers on board at the time of the accidents.

“The first accident occurred at 9am and the second at 3pm due to overcrowding,” said Rezaul Karim, the officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station.

The victims were going to Cox’s Bazar from Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram to attend a religious event at Hazrat Shahe Malek Shah Mazar Sharif, the OC said.

Members of Navy, Coast Guard and Fire Service jointly conducted the rescue operation after the accident and recovered bodies.
