Petition seeks High Court guidance over Feni river water sharing

A writ petition has been filed challenging the validity of the agreement signed between Bangladesh and India regarding the water supply to India from Feni river.

Mahmudul Hasan, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, filed the petition at the relevant branch of the High Court.

The petition sought guidance on full control of Bangladesh in supervising the supply of water and placement of pumps.

At the same time, the petition has requested to keep the water supply closed until the writ petition is dissolved.

The writ petition states according to the treaty, “Bangladesh has agreed to provide 1.82 cusecs of water from the Feni river. But in the newspapers there are reports that India has been illegally drawing 30-34 cusecs of water from 34 places since the beginning of 2010. After the agreement, if Bangladesh does not have control over the water, India will draw water according to their demand."
