Supreme Court upholds ex-MP Rana’s bail order

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the High Court (HC) order that granted bail to former Awami League MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana from Tangail-3 constituency in a case filed over killing two Jubo League leaders.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, rejecting the appeal filed by state for canceling the HC bail.

Defense lawyers said there is no bar to release ex-MP Rana from jail on bail after today’s order.

On June 19, the High Court gave permanent bail to Rana in the murder case, clearing the way for his release from prison.

A day later, the Supreme Court stayed until July 1 the verdict following a government petition seeking a stay on the HC judgment.

Jubo League activists -- Shamim and Mamun -- were killed on the orders of Rana and his brother Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon in Tangail in July 2012, the investigation officer of the case said.
