High Court for strict measures against the use of toxic chemicals in fruits

The High Court (HC) has asked the authorities concerned of the government to take strict measures against the wrongdoers, who mix toxic chemicals in fruits.

The HC bench of Justice of FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader came up with the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The HC bench, however, rejected the report of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) about their measures against the use of toxic chemicals in fruits.

Expressing dissatisfaction, the HC bench said, “Million dollars are being siphoned off but necessary equipment for the test of toxic chemicals are not being purchased.”

The court asked the BSTI to prepare a complete report and submit it on June 23.

The court, however, accepted another report done by Rapid Action Battalion which said they are conducting drives against the shops and warehouses who use chemical all over the country.

The HC on May 20 ordered the government to form teams to monitor fruit markets and warehouses across the country to check the use of harmful chemicals.
