3 ‘drug peddlers’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfights’

COX’S BAZAR: Three ‘drug peddlers’, including two Rohingyas, were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Cox’s Bazar in two days.

The deceased were identified as Md Faruk Hossain, 23, and Saiful Islam, 28, of Block No-1 under Camp No-19 at Thaikhali Rohingya Camp under  Ukhia upazila, and Mohammad Mohiuddin, 26, son of Sirajul Islam of Naikkhongchhari upazila in Bandarban district.

“Being informed, BGB members conducted a drive at Palongkhali in Bangladesh-Myanmar border area in the early hours of Monday,” said  BGB commanding officer of Ukhia,Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad.

He informed that sensing presence of BGB personnel, the drug peddlers opened fire on BGB personnel prompting them to retaliate resulting in a gunfight.

The BGB official mentioned that at one stage, the drug peddlers fled the scene leaving Faruk and Saiful with bullet wounds.

“They were rushed to the upazila health complex where on-duty physicians declared them dead,” he said.

A total of 20,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and two sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.

“Faruk Hossain and Saiful Islam were listed drug peddlers who used to smuggle drugs from Myanmar through different points of Teknaf and Ukhia upazilas,” he added.

Meanwhile, RAB members carried out another drive at Marine Drive near Puranpara in Cox’s Bazar district headquarters in the early hours of Sunday.

Sensing presence of members of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on them prompting a gunfight.

At one stage, the criminals left the spot leaving Mohiuddin in bullet wounds.

He was rushed to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared him dead, said Major Mohammad Rabiul Islam of RAB-15.

A locally-manufactured gun, 10,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and three cartridges were recovered from the spot.

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
