The European Union on Friday urged the Bangladesh government to take measures for ensuring safety at workplaces.
“Bangladesh should take similar measures like ready-made garments (RMG) for ensuring safety in industries and housing sectors,” Konstantinos Vardakis, Chargé d'Affaires of EU in Bangladesh, said.The EU attaches high importance to safety at the workplace and has been working since 2013 with the authorities of Bangladesh to improve workplace safety in the RMG sector.
“The Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh expresses its deep condolences for the loss of lives from the fire at FR Tower on Kamal Ataturk Avenue at Banani, Dhaka,” the Chargé d'Affaires of EU said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families which lost their dear ones,” the Chargé d'Affaires added. The EU Delegation also wished early recovery of those who have sustained injuries from the fire.
Earlier on Thursday, a devastating fire caught the 22-storey FR Tower at Banani, which is reported to have been constructed ignoring the design of RAJUK, around 12:30pm on Thursday.
The death toll from the Banani bizarre inferno rose to 25 including a foreigner and about 120 people were injured.
