A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed the driver of a bus belonging to Suprobhat Paribahan on a 7-day remand in a case filed over death of a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in a road accident in the capital on Tuesday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Odhikari passed the order after Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (operation) of Gulshan police station, also investigating officer of the case, produced the driver, Sirajul Islam, before the court with a plea for 10-day remand.

Opposing the remand petition, the defence lawyer submitted a bail petition for the bus driver, but the court rejected the plea after a hearing.

BUP student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury died after being run over by the bus in front of the main gate of Bashundhara Residential Area.

After the accident, police arrested the driver. Victim’s father Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury filed a case with Gulshan police in this regard on Tuesday.
