Bangladesh Association of Paurashava Services (BAPS) demanded Tk 1,249 crore in the upcoming national budget for salaries and pension benefits of countrywide municipalities’ officials and employees.

They also demanded that the government pay their salaries and bonuses, and honorarium of mayors and councillors from the government non-development sector.

The BAPS sent a written statement to mass media depicting their demands.

They said the salaries and bonuses of 35,000 staffers of 260 municipalities remained unpaid for two to 68 months, putting them with their family members in serious financial sufferings.

Of them, some 6,000 staffers have been without salaries for five years, around 12,000 for two years and another 5,000 for a year, said the latest statistics of BAPS.

Two employees—one from Santahar municipality in Bogura and the other from Bhagatipara municipality in Natore—have not got salaries for around seven years.

There are 327 municipalities in the country. The total amount of unpaid salaries now stands at Tk 642.25 crore.
