Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Salina Hayat Ivy on Monday threatened to resign if the local administration does not assist her in resolving the city problems, including traffic congestion, eviction of illegal bus stands and hawkers.

The city mayor expressed her offended reaction while addressing a views-exchange meeting with the high officials of the district and police administrations, Wasa, BRTA and Public Works Department at Nagar Bhaban.

“I’ll render my resignation letter to the Prime Minister if the local administrations don’t help me resolve the problems,” Ivy said.

She said footpaths have gone under illegal occupation and footpath shops are being given electricity connections illegally. “Once I was vocal against such illegal acts,” she said, posing a question, “Is it the work of only mayor? Do the DC and the SP not have any responsibility?”

Noting that all the government departments are for people’s welfare, Ivy said there are political conflicts and competitions in all the 64 districts but the authorities in 63 other districts perform their administrative works overcoming the problems. “But why has it been stalled in Narayanganj?”

She further said the DC and the SP can do everything if they want to and they have to do that.

Presided over by Ivy, the programme was attended, among others, by additional district magistrate (acting) Sarwar Hossain, addition police super Naresh Chakma, PWD assistant engineer M Abul Hossain, NCC councilors and its chief executive officer (acting) Mahmudur Rahman Habib.
