At the 97th Academy Awards, Demi Moore was a strong contender for Best Actress, thanks to her role in The Substance. She played a fading celebrity who starts taking drugs in an attempt to create a younger version of herself, only to face unexpected consequences.

Ahead of the Oscars, many expected Moore to win, especially after she received top honours at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards. However, it was 25-year-old Mikey Madison who walked away with the prestigious award for her role in Anora by Sean Baker. Over a month after the ceremony, Moore revealed that, deep down, she had a feeling that Mikey would win and even told her manager about it. Despite the loss, Moore remained calm and said that she “didn’t feel gutted" by the outcome.

Speaking with Time Magazine, Moore said, “I leaned over and whispered to my manager, ‘I think it’s going to Mikey.’ I don’t know why I knew, but I did. I was so centered and calm. I didn’t feel gutted. I didn’t feel any of those kinds of things. I just trusted, and am in trust of, whatever is going to unfold. The physical, human part that has ego, of course, has disappointment. It certainly would have been wonderful to have won."
