A person was killed suffocating from smoke during a fire at a residential hotel in the port city on Tuesday late at night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Barek, 55, a resident of Chittagong’s Sandwip Upazila. He was staying in a room in that hotel.
Sources said a fire broke out at the residential ‘Hotel Rose View’ at Alankar intersection in the city’s Pahartali area at around 11:00pm on Tuesday.
On receiving information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after a frantic effort of two hours, said Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Abdur Razzak.
Barek was rescued from room 306 of the hotel at that time and was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he said.
Abdur Razzak said the fire originated from an electric short-circuit in the storeroom of the hotel. Later, smoke spread to the adjacent rooms, which caused suffocation for Barek.
Inspector (Investigation) Rozina Khatun of Pahartali police station said Barek was suffering from respiratory problems earlier.
