Vegetables get dearer, meat cheaper post-Eid

Prices of potato as well as many other vegetables, onion, ginger and garlic increased in the capital’s kitchen markets a week after the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Demand for vegetables and other essentials in Dhaka increased on Friday as city dwellers returned to the capital after almost a weeklong Eid vacation.
Higher demand has driven up the prices of vegetables in the capital, said Sofiqul Islam, a vegetable trader at a kitchen market in Mirpur.

Visiting different kitchen markets in Mirpur and areas surrounding it, our correspondent found that prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk10-20 per kg compared to their prices before the Eid.
The price of cabbage was Tk40 per piece on Friday, while it was Tk25 before Eid. Over the last one week, Brinjal price jumped to Tk50-60 from Tk30-50 per kg, cauliflower to Tk40-50 from Tk30-35 per piece, beans to Tk70-80 from Tk30-50 per kg, carrot to Tk60 from Tk40 per kg, pointed gourd to Tk80 from Tk60 per kg, ribbed gourd to Tk80 from Tk60 per kg, bottled gourd to Tk40-60 per piece from Tk30-40 per piece, and sponge gourd to Tk100 from Tk60 per kg.

On Friday, okra sold at Tk60, tomato at Tk40, papaya at Tk50, and spiny gourd at Tk50, which were the same prices they had a week ago.
Drumstick (sojne) price declined to Tk100 per kg on Friday from Tk160 before Eid, bitter gourd to Tk60 from Tk70 per kg, and yardlong bean to Tk80 per kg from Tk100.
Potatoes sold at Tk55-60, onions at Tk70, local garlic at Tk200, and imported garlic at Tk240 per kg on that day.
On 5 April, the price of potato was Tk40-45, onion was Tk50, local garlic was Tk140 and imported garlic was Tk220 per kg.
Broiler chicken price declined to Tk230 per kg this weekend, after skyrocketing to Tk280-290 per kg ahead of the Eid day. Sonali chicken price on Friday was Tk350-360 per kg, which skyrocketed to Tk370-380 before Eid. Farm eggs sold at Tk125 per dozen at the kitchen markets on Friday.  
Milon Bhuiyan, a chicken trader at Mirpur-6 kitchen market said the chicken market became unstable before Eid and its price has been fluctuating at the wholesale level since then.
Beef sold at Tk750-780 per kg and mutton at Tk1,100 per kg on Friday. The price of Beef increased to Tk800 per kg and mutton to Tk1,200 per kg ahead of Eid.
