A special court on Tuesday extended until 23 May the period of bail granted to Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case filed for violating labour law.
Judge MA Awal of the Labour Appellate Tribunal passed the order as Dr Yunus appeared before the court and pleaded for permanent bail in connection with the case.
Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun moved the plea for Dr Yunus while senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE).

Dhaka's 3rd Labour Court on 1 January 2024 convicted Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Yunus, its Director and former Managing Director Md Ashraful Hasan, members of the Board of Directors Nur Jahan Begum and Md Shahjahan of violating the labour law and sentenced them to months in prison.
The court, however, allowed the four convicts one-month interim bail on condition of filing an appeal against the conviction.
DIFE Inspector Arifuzzaman filed the case on 9 September 2021 for not regularising 101 staff and not establishing a welfare fund for the labourers, among others.
