As many as 1,027 unauthorised health facilities are currently running across the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
At the same time, a total of 15,233 licensed hospitals/clinics, diagnostic centres and blood banks are providing healthcare services in the country, DGHS data show.
The DGHS mentioned statistics of the country’s authorised and unauthorised health facilities in a report sent to the High Court in response to a court order following a writ petition.
“We have already submitted our report about the private health facilities to the court. We have found the presence of 1,027 illegal health facilities across the country,” Dr Abu Hussain Md Moinul Ahsan, director (hospital) at the DGHS, told the Daily Sun.
He said they also sent letters to the local authorities concerned to shut down all the unauthorised hospitals/clinics, diagnostic centres and blood banks within 10 days across the country.
“We will shutdown all the unauthorised healthcare facilities,” Dr Moinul Ahsan added.
Earlier, the High Court on 15 January asked the director general of the DGHS to submit lists of authorised and unauthorised hospitals and clinics across the country in a month.
The DGHS, later, asked the divisional health offices and district civil surgeons to submit information on all unuathorised hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres and blood banks and to take action against those.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order after hearing a writ petition about death of Ayaan at Dhaka’s United Hospital, filed by his father Shamim Ahmed.
Court sources said the court received a list of the number of unlicensed and approved hospitals across the country submitted by the DGHS.
The court has set February 18 for hearing. Meanwhile, the report will be filed in the court with an affidavit, the sources added.
